Do you like it? Love it? Hate it? Never heard of it?

Here in South Africa we get Marmite, Bovril, and Oxo brands. I only know about Vegemite because of Men at Work. I only started eating it recently, and it takes some getting used to, but I like it!

Does anyone know how it's made? I've always got so much left over yeast, that I wonder if its a fairly simple process to make an extract. I read that it may be done through a process called 'autolysis,' does anyone know what that means? Or if there is any other way to do it?

I was under the impression that OXO and Bovril were meat based.

None of the above are edible - and that includes Promite.
Vegemite is the only edible one. And then only if you've been introduced to it shortly after birth. And you like salt a lot.

I know the main ingredient in Oxo is yeast extract; there is some beef extract in it, but that's farther down the list. It only tastes slightly different to me. I assume Bovril is the same.

I'm sure it would help to have eaten it from birth, otherwise it is definitely an acquired taste. I love super salty foods though.

When the yeasts run out of food they start cannibalizing .

I actually found out that here in South Africa, Oxo and Bovril contain no beef extract, only yeast extract and some artificial beef flavour. This is because there is no local producer of beef extract, and beef product imports are tightly controlled to keep out BSE and hoof and mouth disease. I read on wikipedia that Bovril in the UK has no beef extract in it anymore either.

Yeast Extract
Salt
Vegetable Extract
Vitamin: Niacin
Spices
Vitamins: B1, B2, Folic Acid, B12

Marmite is also made under license throughout the world. In New Zealand, the ingredients are :

Yeast
Sugar
Salt
Wheatgerm Extract
Mineral Salt (508)
Color (Caramel)
Herbs
Spices
Vitamins: Niacin, Thiamin, Riboflavin

Still doesn't make it edible.

It's funny, since I started this poll, I have been eating Oxo every day; I've really grown to love it. It also helps that I get it for free since the gf is the brand manager for it here in SA

I find it hard to believe that anyone could enjoy eating Oxo.

I'll stick to having it on toast.

Yes it could be quite embarrasing if the gf was "Grand Father" rather than Girlfriend
