I'm running my 1st generation of Shiner's sweetfeed wash. I racked the wash into a clean bucket and added a little water to the fermenter to keep the yeast happy. I wasn't able to run the wash until 4 days later. The wash is fine but the fermenter has a thin mold layer on top. I had planned on using the backset from this run to melt the next sugar...cool then add back to the fermenter...Should I toss the yeast bed, grains and all in the fermenter and start over? Or is this normal?

I would say you waited too long. I would toss it and start fresh but use the backset in it.

I don't know what caused the mold. Why would it not mold if I had run the wash and added back to the yeast bed? I did keep every thing covered and clean...or does the yeast/sugar conversion prevent molding?

The protective layer of CO2 formed by active fermentation is what inhibits mold growth. By racking it and disturbing that layer. Then not getting it going again soon enough to get some CO2 over it. Is what let the nasties in.

Just had an "Ah Ha" moment! Awesome....Even though the run I'm doing now is not going as expected...not bad...just not as expected...my mind is making connections...

Sweetfeed fail!

I used the backset from that last run in the new ferment. Before I could run it...it molded...before I racked it this time. I ran the wash anyway. I don't understand why I'm having troubles with the sweetfeed and mold issues. I clean everything...any cleaning tips...soap or bleach or anthing not to use?

How long do I have after a wash finishes? The wash may finish in 5-7 days, but it may be another two weeks before I can run it...Sugar washes never gave me this problem.

I think I'll try again...only this time I'm going to save the backset in the fridge until I can be sure I'll have a good run window...about 10 days...however if the wash stalls...I'm screwed...again.

any other ideas?

It mite be in the sweetfeed? Try boiling the whole thing. Then let it cool to pitching temp. This will sterilize it. And take any question about ingredients out.

grain harbors bacteria then add sugar and,,,,as stated you can boil the wash.or use k meta..
as for cleaning chlorine will work but be sure to air out after (upside down"
better is one of the "no rinse" cleaners from brew shops.

Thanks for your help...I've had nothing but problems with this sweetfeed... I may just use the back set and try a UJSM. Of course I could just stick with Sugar washes and fill jars with fresh fruit and 50% neutral...great Christmas gifts. Where is that flavored thread anyway?
