Good Morning fellow shiners. I am a rookie at shining and was wondering if anyone to give me a simple design to start out with? Also i am planning to do this on a hill where there is no water i was thinking using a 55 gallon drum and filling it with water to send through condenser? If any has any insights, tips or simple designs I would gladly take it in and absorb it! Remember we were all at this rookie stage and asking for help.. Thank You!

will you have power? what are the ambient temperatures? why are you doing this outside? how far is this location from your home? how much whiskey would you like to make?

a 55 gallon drum should be okay depending on how big of a run you do and how hot the water is inside it when it starts...

Possibly power but i was thinking on using either a hand pump or a water pump and using a generator, its probably about 6 acres from my house, its at my camp on top of the hill, no power. Maine temps vary, Im doing outside because it is discreet my parents would kill me and know if i did it in the house. And just enough whiskey for two people to have a good time i was thinking to just use a large boiling pot or something, thanks

Little nervous about keeping your water cool. Currently I use a large garbage can and recycle but on a long 12-17 hour run I have to change the water out 1-2 times depending on outside temps.

@ MaineMoonshiner,

You need to be careful. If Mommy and Daddy find out they are going to take your computer away from you and put you on restriction.

If you don't have a safe location to do it then not much is going to go your way. Running a generator is usually not practical. Using a 12v battery and a 12v pump would be more practical.

for my still, I have a 10ltr SS pot with 5meters of 10mm copper tubing inserted into the lid and coiled on the outside. the lid is fastened with clamps and everything is sealed with flour paste. this makes for a very simple air cooled still, everything you need to do is apply heat.

The heat needs to be pretty controllable, since if too much is applied only vapor will come out, and if too little is applied, nothing will come out. It goes slow, but not alot of heat is required.

in some ways, my still resembles the one described @ http://distillers.tastylime.net/library ... /index.htm, only SS and copper though, and an external heat source to keep it simple..

remember to be safe, and learn as much as you can.

What ever you decide, make sure you have a couple fire extinguishers near the operating still. And 10 gallons of water in addition to your cooling water.
