Yep, I am on my second year of Centennial, Pearl and Willamette. Nothing much last year but I have several shoots coming up from each rhizome that I planted. Might just be able to use some this fall if they make it through the summer.

Yeah, my Cascade traveled under my cement driveway about 25 foot and came up into my evergreen tree. Be careful out there!

Could it crack a driveway if it wasn't already?

I dont beleive so. Underground the root are very pliable. But they will travel under anything, so be prepared.

The homebrew stores, and they are rihzomes, not seeds, roots that propagate. You may be a bit late for this year, they come out in feb.

In your case, plant them in a big pot.

I just got mine from the homebrew shop 3 weeks ago. I would say if you did it quick you could get them in the ground and start them this year. May not have a good yield? But they would get set in for next years better crop.
It's an aggressive vine that grows up to 25 foot tall. So I wouldn't put them in a garden. And you will need something to let them grow up. Something to support them.

you might get some for free (or very cheap) if you can find someone local growing them, hops can be dug up and cut up and replanted into multiple plants.
a local home brew beer club might be able to help and i just just looked on ebay.usa and there are heaps on there
they can also be struck from the bine (vines) with some luck
2nd year and after is when the cones will really get going

they are invasive in the garden so use big pots if you don't want them taking over areas...

BD, if you ever get to the mainland and you like wine, the Yakima Valley has a plethora of wineries. Why do I mention this? Because it would be a great road trip for you just south of Yakima on the way to Walla Walla is a large area of farmland dedicated to growing hops. You might be able to purchase and talk to some of the farmers and learn first hand...Hell that sounds like a trip I want to make again!

Paririe P, I have sunbeam, cascade, centenial, mount hood, and nugget. I live in Nebraska, not to far from you, so maybe next year we could trade some rhysumes, I would be interested in expanding my varity. Last year I got several five gallon buckets of cones, real big nice ones, but even if I didn't use them it's fun to watch them grow. I think some hot days they grow several inches a day. They are a hit where I live, everyone stops and looks at them, asks what the hell is growing there.

Ever bit into a hops bud? I was at a local brewery with some friends, where you pay for a session to brew your own beer. We got drinking and one of the guys there got me to bite into one. Took hours to get rid of that taste.
Dont the plants stink? That is what Ive heard anyway.. Never grew it. Grew a cousin of it once.

I spliced a hops top onto it's best known relative's roots in the early 70's after reading about it in a book. It grew and did what it was supposed to, but damn, wht a failure in terms of usability. Tastes good in beer...

MuleMan, I had to laugh at your post. " Never grew it. Grew a cousin of it once" Now I know about you!!! I think all of us here in the midwest grew COUSINS a time or two.

Grew Cascade hops in South Central Kansas for 5 years. First year 3 of 4 grew 15' high the first year. Each subsequent year they grew a little taller. Some I ran up poles, some on twine alongside the house. Produced a gallon bag or so of useable hops per plant. With decent soil they were real easy to grow.
Have moved to different part of the state recently and planted 4 rhizomes a couple weeks ago. Fingers are crossed I'll have the same luck.

hops is the highest estrogen plant on the planet,
it will make a young girl go into puberty faster if she is exposed to hops at a young age,
so what does it do to a man?

Homebrew talk has a whole section on hop growing. There is about a dozen of us on that forum that are growing it in south Florida. Hard to believe. I have cascade, centienal, williamette growing. If we can grow it here, anywhere should be fair game.
