Too much packing?

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

Too much packing?

Post by hendecp »

Let me start by saying that my still works fine and on my first alcohol run I was pulling 93% in the foreshots into the heads. I was running it in reflux mode at about 3-4 drops per second in my 2" Boka.

My question is about the packing and if I have too much, or can I reduce what I have in the column to use somewhere else? The column is 36" to the point where the coil head is connected. I bought a box of pure copper pot scrubbers off of amazon. There were about 40 scrubbers in the box. Now, they all fit inside the column packed in. Do I need this much in the column? It seems to work fine and it has lots of breathing room. I plan on using this as a pot still for the next few runs with UJSSM so I will remove the packing. But when I go back to neutral or total reflux still operation, do I need ALL of those scrubbies?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a lot to me. I have my 12" sections packed with 8 pot scubbers. You don't want to back them in there. You want to place them in there. You should be able to breath through it with no restriction.

I would say try 24 to 30 of them. Dint use one to push the next one in place. Use a rod or something to push each one into place. That way they don't get to compacted.

I made a tool with a wire coat hanger that has a small hook on one end. For removing them. And I bent the other end so it was about 1.5" squared to push them in.

Hey Hendecp
40 sounds like an awful lot for just 36" ....they're sposed to be just loosely placed in there I would think 18-24 should get you where you need to be .
and you might wanna leave a few in there for the UJSSM it'll help with purity and proof
