As said hello all. New guy here, looking to get started, dont want to get beat up. I have wired and plumbed a few houses, worked in a steam plant, was a paper machine operator for many years useing PLC's and process controls, and am a FANATIC about learning how to do things PROPERLY. I have already read for tens of hours here so I wont be asking too many questions, and wont be doing ANYTHING until I am sure it is 100% correct and SAFE. I am hopeing that the Veterns will take me under thier wings should I have any troubles or issues. I am greatly looking forward to mastering this new skill, and it will be a great and rewarding venture. I have my goals set at 100% QUALITY product. I am not so terribly concerned about the $'s invested as I Plan for a lifetime build/setup. Currently I am in the process of procureing build supplies and will be asking a few questions I hope to be answered by the Veterns. Thats about it for now.
Thank's

Re: Hello All
Hey there, good to see you around here. Just make sure when you get your supplies that you use relatively inert metals such as stainless steel and copper. the last think you want is a metal that will rust and give your hard earned spirit the taste of coins.
Hope to see more of you.

Welcome to HD cornhound, You have found the right place to learn your nwe hobby, happy stillin.
Sometimes I wonder why is that Frisbee getting bigger......and then it hits me.
Re: Hello All
Thanks for the Welcomes guys... yes its stainless and copper all the way, (food grade plastic barrel for wash on the way) and I just happen to have a journeyman pipefitter at the ready. Now to make copious amount of notes, refine my process/procedures and away I go. Going to stick to a simple sugar wash till I perfect it then Rum is the chosen nectar of the Gods for this guy. Interestingly I just got a contact through a friend at a local University who is VERY interested in my new hobby/skill/compulsion, and has a lab to run samples. That may sound like overkill for a start but I dont do things half-assed, I am a bit obsessive about things.
Re: Hello All
You sound ready, sometimes you can over read. Starting the build for me took the longest as I also wanted to make sure I chose the right design and I was doing everything correctly but actually starting it was my best learning curve.

Re: Hello All
FYI I'm several (5+) iterations in on a brown sugar wash (Adapted pugirum's from the "tried and true"), and the mid-late tails has developed an amazing rum taste. Since it sounds like you've got a head start already, I might suggest starting with something like that instead of a simple sugar wash as it's basically the same thing (just a little molasses in the brown sugar), and recycling dunder/backset is a very basic but important skill you'll need to master. It's really amazing how the output changes after 3 or so cycles of recycling dunder/backset - that's where a lot of the rum/whiskey flavor comes in. So, your first few washes will pretty much be sugar washes anyways, but after a few practice runs you'll be that much closer to getting a rum.
Tried and true sugar washes are great places to start (I started there), but I don't think making a change like switching from white to brown sugar and recycling the dunder will trip you up too much.
BUT, this only brings my post count to 3, so if more experienced members of this forum chime in and say no, stick to the tried and true before experimenting, by all means listen to them because they really do know whats best for you.
