glue

does anyone know of ANY adhesive i can use in my still ?
(maybe rtv silicone ?) but really , if anyone knows about anything that could work without me having to poison myself in the process...
by the way , i need it to be alcohol tolerant , but not to be tolerant to very high heat. i need it for the cold end of the still.

A lot of people say that but I have yet to see a pool filled with 93% alcohol.

Re: glue [re: thedude]

Actually it's full of water with a tiny percentage of chlorine in it, quite different than a still. A still has liquid and vaporus alcohol in very high percentages, and a still is heated to boilin'. Nothin' like a pool.

Besides, back to the original topic. Glue is bad in stills. I'll never be convinced otherwise.

If you think ya need glue for yer still ya probably actually need to learn to solder, or use a gasket, or the proper fittin's, etc. There is allways somethin' that will work better than glue in a still.

I agree with THM 100%.
What exactly are you trying to accomplish with glue ?
There are a number of ways to join the different parts of a still without even going into soldering (which is quite easy) and require a minimum of basic tools, like pressure fittings for example.

Re: glue [re: theholymackerel]

hey ,
first , i know how to solder quite well. i built my still completely myself and i am quite proud of it
second i was thinking about making a device for floating the alcohol meter , in real time (i know there is one described in the site , what i was thinking about is of a differnt design) .
my problem is i want to attach something transperant (say glass tube ...) to copper , and i have no idea how to go about it .
ANY idea would be greatly appreciated.

Re: glue [re: liquias]

I never said ya didn't know how to solder. I simply listed solderin' as one of many methods better than glue.

I'm sure you've read all the recent messages about safe/unsafe still materials. If yer gonna be touchy about replies it's best not to post a "can I use glue in my still" type post.

Re: glue [re: liquias]

Did you see the picture of my device under "éprouvette" ?
Any way, if you wanted to connect a glass tube to a copper one, choose a copper pipe that fits snugly around the glass and seal the joint with plaster of Paris or flower and water.

Re: glue [re: cartouche]

That would work.
Also could use very thin walled copper and put a cork gasket between glass and copper, then simply burnish the copper in twords the center. Like settin a cab in it's bezel.

Re: glue [re: theholymackerel]

guys , i never said anything that even implies touchiness !
i thank you for your advices !
i mearly stated that soldering is not the problem (as for working with glass , and copper ...)
and that im proud of my work ! (i am , i really am ...)

cork gasket is a nice solution , i will check into that.
and i'll check out cartouche's idea also, though i dont know how snug attachments can really get between copper and glass :\ plaster of paris sounds like a wonderfull idea , this is somewhat like an adhesive , this might be what im looking for .
again , thank you ,
and by all meens , feel free to speak your mind at any time , as far as im concerned .

no, i am sad to say i never saw your attachment post of "éprouvette"
i did a string search right now for it , but i found nothing .
can you direct me to it ?
or maybe repost it ?

Re: glue [re: liquias]

When I say snug, the can easly be 1mm in diameter bigger than the glass, the plaster will seal it, no problem.
I don't know exactly what you are trying to accomplish, I have the impression that you want to have a window in a tube. If it is so, take the tube (1mm larger than the glass) cut your window and slip your glass tube inside, put a cap at each end and seal the whole thing.
Of course you would have soldered all your fittings to the caps ahead of time.

Liquias, try JB Waterweld. According to the JB Weld site: "It's water-proof; petroleum-, chemical-, and acid-resistent; resists shock, vibration, and extreme temperature fluctuations, and withstands temperatures up to 300º F"

also, :"WATERWELD is approved by the National Sanitation Foundation for use with potable water (meaning you can drink safely from fresh water pipes or utinsels repaired with it)."

I used it to make a connection on my boiler and so far it has worked well. Of course, it I were to make the same connection today, I'd probably use solder.

It's here in "Stills and appurtenances", go back a couple of pages, it's titled "éprouvette".
I use it all the time, it works very well.

Cartouche, that image doesn't have an extention on the file name to tell people's browsers what kind of file it is.
It needs to end in an extension like .jpg or .gif (depending on what it is).

Re: glue [re: MrPlace]

Éprouvette is also french for test tube.
In this case, the product flows in the upper funnell like part, in the main tube sits the hidrometer, the overflow gets collected by a second funnell around the main tube and exits through the spout.
That way you have a continous reading of the strength of your product.
