Anybody Huntin'?

Post by Washashore »

Our season opener isn't until Oct. 15 and am really gettin the itch. Just took the state Bowhunter Ed class yesterday to hunt upstate New York. Bowhunting and stillin' are my only two obsessions, almost time for both!

We opened up Sept 1st, went out this morning and whiffed on a doe. Apparently i'm a better fisherman than hunter!
The man bangin' on the door yelled "Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms!"....I just assumed it was more supplies.

General Buck season opens on the 29th, got several decent bucks on the ranch
nothing big, just 22 - 24 inch kind of stuff, Pheasant season opens on the 13th
of October - Birds are thick as fleas this year, lots of late hatch really young birds
not much color on them yet - should make late season really good.

Goose opens the same day but really not good until we get some snow.

Elk season is late October and we drew great tags for big bulls.

Bow season opened here on the 15th. I haven't gotten to go though. I have been trying to find another spot to hunt but it is getting tough to find land. I have 150 acres a friends family is letting me hunt but had another 80 acres fall through so no backups. Timber companies have gotten ridiculous on their lease prices. Tough on a poor country boy.

I think I am the only guy in Arkansas that's never duck hunted so I am not even sure what the seasons are for waterfowl.

I cant see paying the price for that stuff or hevi-shot/blackcloud when kent or estate work just fine for me. I do everything in my power to get em close so I dont have to take far shots. All this talk about waterfowl has got me pumped!! Keep me posted on how the blindside works though...I am often easily persuaded

the black cloud cuts through their kevlar feathers like butter thats why I like them. But as for the blind side I dont know, there is more shot more powder and they say it causes 250% more trauma. Now I dont know what that means for the breast but if it drops them first shot and leaves the breast ok then I will continue to buy them. to tell ya the truth I would bag alot more ducks if my shotgun barrel didnt bend a different way each time I shot

"there is more shot more powder "
not likely..one or the other, your limited by pressure.so if you have more shot you have to have less powder as it builds up more pressure to push out the shot.now to some extent you can use a slower burning powder but this only goes so far.

Yes sir berg, that is the game,so you can see their itty bitty little eyes, but once the shootin starts they get super smart! (as you know) I have been a blackcloud fan since it came out,as far as paying their premium prices,I wait until the end of seaon and buy over stock, usally from rogers shipping is sometimes free! Pf buddy is trying blindside this year! I cant see a cube flying right, but then I am not a engineer, and do you know if they sell their own chock like most specialty shell companies do?
As far as pumped up boat is full of gear and on trailer ready for H2o,dog is going nuts, and wife said the other nite " is that time alrady" and my bussiness partner asked yesterday" so when are you going start disappering for a couple days at a time".
I dont know what everyones weather has been, but woodstove has been going for two days and we had frost yesterday morning, geese have been in the fields in groups of hundreds already,it is going to be a stellar year early!!

Shot this with my crossbow 2 weeks ago. I know I know a crossbow isn't a real bow but the meats in my freezer and that's what counts. She had 3 piglets with her, after she ran bout 40 yds and fell they just stood there so we chased em down and caught em by hand. Fattin em up right now with corn, I'm feelin a cochon de lait comin up round Christmas time! We hunt in Mississippi for deer. Opens the weekend before Thanksgiving for guns. Can't wait!

Nothing wrong with a crossbow! I have access one of those new PSE tac-15 crossbows that attach to an AR lower. Might have to take it out in the woods and let er rip!

I've never shot one. They're illegal here unless you have handicap permit. Those I know that have used them, much preferred their bow. I've always wanted to try one out.

Use to be the same here in La. Had to be handicap or I think 65 in age, but a few years ago they made it legal for anyone to use them. Hogs are considered a nuisance here so there's no limit and you can hunt them day or night. It was about 3am when I shot the one in the pic. We had fresh cracklins for breakfast that morning and a buddy of mine made some damn good hoghead cheese with her to! I'm gettin hungry.

So, I'm in my tree stand chillin... I hear crunch, crunch, crunch....... Then I see him. Looked to be a 10 point buck. The woods are still pretty thick this time of year and I'm struggling to get a good clear shot. He gets a little spooked and starts to trot a little faster. I forgot to mention that I've been holding my bow a full draw for about 2 or 3 minutes and am starting to get a little shaky. As he starts to trot out of range, I decided to take the shot. I was leading him a little as he was picking up speed. Then " THAWACK!!!!!", the arrow leaves my bow and then I hear "CRACK" as the carbon splintered into a bazillion pieces when it hit that damn tree!!!!!
Needless to say, I was a little ticked off at myself...
Damn tunnel vision......

Bow opens here in NY in another week. They backed it up by a couple of weeks this year so i'm scrambling a bit to get ready. the early start date threw my timing off a little, but im looking forward to it.

Nice score there stillin ...I still need to get my license and do some scoutin myself (for deer)

I usually just use a bow, too many clowns go out with guns for my taste. (no offense y'all)
