Fermentation - How fast should it be bubbling?

Post by Boots »

Got a corn/barley wash going, about a gallon's worth (test run), and it's been bubbling at about 1 bubble about every 2 seconds, for the last 2-3 days. I never saw anything I would describe as furious or violent bubbling out of the airlock, it's been pretty steady. Is this a slow fermentation or am I on a good track? I used the recipe on the home site for no cook mashing whiskey, FYI. If I smell above the airlock I get a strong corn smell, like stuff is happening, just want to make sure that I shouldn;t be adding more yeast or anything (I put in about 3 grams of whisky yeast.
Thanks

All the sucessfull fermentations I've done so far bubble quite furiously at the start, forming a fair amount of foam and such. I don't know enough about brewing yet to tell you whats wrong but if you post a few more details I'm sure someone who does will give a hand

Thanks. Do you remember for how long at the start? I actually remember that I started it at nite right before I went to sleep and then did not check it until I got back from work, so it actually could have had a long time to do a stronger fermentation before I checked it. I guess smell and result will be the only way to know for sure.

A 1 gallon batch will have much less bubbles that a larger (say 20L) batch. A bubble every 2s does not sound too slow. If this was scaled up to a 5g wash, then it would be in the 5 bubbles every 2s range, which is about right.

If it's fermenting don't worry about how fast it's going, just be patent anl let it run it's coarse.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer.

Fermenting time is about like forecasting the weather unless it's in a climate controlled atmosphere, like Remus said let it run its course.
Never follow good whiskey with water, unless you're out of good whiskey!!!
