What's their habitat?

Shroom season's coming to the left coast in a couple of months. Really looking forward to it!

Nice haul you got there!! It's been very dry up here on the west coast of Canucksville, but we had a bit of rain to day and some due next week...can't wait to get out there There and get me some chanterelles and some pine mushrooms!!

I would love to get my hands on some fresh chanterelles, but I have no idea where to go. Any suggestions beelah?

I wish I knew more about edible mushrooms... I can ID oyster mushrooms (never seen any where I live), morels (never seen one in the wild ever), sulphur shelf. I just learned about porcinis (don't think I've seen any here).

BD--- i always find these guys growing on oaks. This monster was growing on an oak that was about 10" in diameter, and snapped about 10' up. It's been dubbed one of the "foolproof four" in new england--- nearly impossible to mistake for anything else.

Washashore, you lucky bastard... It's been a terrible year for mushrooms so far... I hope it finishes better... I've had my eyes peeled at all times this past week...

Yep, they're good, very good, we call em "hen of the woods" but I prefer morels. Dandy fine eating. Morels come out in the spring though.

I've picked about 20 pounds of oysters and maybe 5 pounds of morels this spring but I don't see Hen of the woods in this area. I am now ready for shaggy manes and brown buttons (honey mushrooms)to start popping up.
We sure eat lots of wild mushrooms in my home...

Yep, brown buttons always grow on old dead stumps.

Hey Rumbuf....depends where you live but the best thing is to see if there is a mycological society in your area you can join...then you get stem local folks that can take you out and show you what habitat the local edibles grow in and also help in identification. I live on the west coast of Canada where we still have some old growth timber standing and some second growth that is over a 100 years old...chanterelles like it in that kind of habitat especially in the deep moss that grows on the forest floor...I think they also grow in deciduous forests back east, especially amongst the oaks...there is a real connection between the kind of trees growing in an area and the type of fungi found there. Good luck hunting, but only eat what you are 100% sure you can ID....when in doubt...throw it out! Kind of like this hobbies...be careful and be safe.

In my neck of the woods El Nino makes for great shrooming. I'm going to mosey on over to the local mycological society and sign up for the November/December forage. Great people great times.

none of them near me. all we get is death caps in peoples lawns.

Been too dry here on the West coast of the US so far this fall but it will come.

you's get them saffron mik caps yonder, they are all through the forests here at the present. I got a heap and have cooked them a stack of ways but am trying to work out the best way of pickling them.

That's amazing, you inspired me to take the quad out tomorrow shroom picking. Making my mouth water right now...

I grew all kinds of mushrooms as a hobby for awhile, and was active in a mycology forum. Good fun, that's for sure.

Flatwoods don't eat nothing growing outage horse shit sept for cayenne or cowhorne peppers! I would end up picking a deadly poison mushroom type to eat with my luck.
