truck rim burner and boiler Q's

Post by Jcusick »

I built a truck rim burner using a water heater burner, and I'm wondering if made it correctly. The top of the burner is a good 4" down inside from the bead of the rim. Is this gonna be too far down to get enough heat? Should I have flames touching the underside of the keg? I played around with a keg filled with 10 gallons of 55 deg water and after just over 1 1/2 hrs it hit 161.
If my burner turns out to be set in too far, I did make it where I should be able to just flip the rim over, weld on some more angle iron supports for the keg, and reinstall the burner on that side. The rim has a couple inches of offset in the center... I'm wondering if I should have it set up where the burner is about 2" closer to the keg.

I would say yes it sounds as if it would work better if it was closer to the pot.

Thanks for confirming what I suspected. Now, all I have to do is get all the pipe and fittings!

I did forget to mention that those temps were reached in 30 mph winds. Still think I should rework it?

I think you should test it in not do windy conditions. And differently not run a still in those conditions without some like of wind break.

I agree. This was in front of an open shed yesterday, but I'll run it in an enclosed (but vented) area on an actual run. Thanks!
