I have done this wheat Germ recipe about four time with similar results each time. Each time I make 5 carboys of wash, still out enough lows to make a car boy to spirit still. Each time I take about a little over a middle third for my cuts and save the feints for later stilling. However on I believe my second batch of Wheat Germ I took the Feints (fore shots were tossed) about 5L worth and instead of distilling them I let them sit in a car boy with about two large handfuls of chunks of smashed up bourbon barrels from JD. It has sat for about 10 months and last night I popped the cork to have a smell and it smelled real really good. So I lifted up that whole damn carboy and splashed a swig back into my mouth. Was ready to spit it out as it IS feints but its tasted just excellent. I remember when I put it in it was clearly feints and smell not so great but it tastes really nice now. Anyone have a similar experience with this recipe and is this ok to be drinking?
*Forgot to add that the Jd chunks I had already used to age a hearts cut of wheat germ for about 4 weeks.

If it was really feints, then, no, do not drink it. Probably won't kill you but it'll be hangover in a bottle at the very best. Pour it back in the still and run it again.

Thanks for the reply. Its too bad because its tastes really good. Guess I'll just save it with the rest of the feints.

Not so fast. If Drox likes it, why not bottle it up and savor it as a nice sipping whiskey. He might get a hangover is he sips a lot at one sitting, but that doesn't mean it is all bad. I'd say, give it a good taste test before recycling it.Mulitpleg wrote:If it was really feints, then, no, do not drink it. Probably won't kill you but it'll be hangover in a bottle at the very best. I get a nasty hangover if I drink my old favorite Evan W.. As long as you removed foreshots you would be ok, you are drinking the stuff that is left in comercial spirits and we remove for a better product.
The old timers around here never made cuts on their shine, the few I talked to thought it was foolish. If it came out of the still, it went in the bottle and they drank it. Might have tasted like paint thinner but they drank it for the "kick". I guess that is the difference between a shiner and an artisan home distiller.

A.D.D. and HD don't go together. This hobby takes time and dedication to learn and do it right and safe.
