Molasses sugar?

Trying to look for un-sulphured molasses in uk. All I am finding is 1 liter jars for about £10, not including postage. Thats about £50 for a gallon.

Here is an example http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wholesome-Swe ... 4d0043c38b I know things are more expensive in the UK, but over 5 times as expensive as I am seeing on this site? Am I even looking at the right stuff?

I found this as well http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/groceries/i ... 2804498613. Is this molasses sugar any use for rum making?

I am trying to slowly switch from turbo yeast and only using white sugar in the wash.

Thanks for advice

That appears to be a first or second strike sugar. It is totally good.

So, can I use this molasses sugar instead of molasses? Until I find a supplier, spending £50 on them, just for 25 liters of wash is too much.

Yes anything brown or amber is going to install more "rum" profile than white. Perhaps augment with a smaller bit of mollasses.

Contact myles and see where he is getting his "treacle". He's in the UK, too, and he might be a real helpful person to get to know if rum is your goal. Great guy, too.

Myles has found "fancy grade catering treacle, and for me it works out at £6.38 per UK gallon."

Two things...
1- look for molasses powder, bakers use it and it works perfectly. The bag will have a recipe for re-hydrating it, no preservatives and lists sugar content. Sense it's a powder, it's dead cheap to ship. http://www.bulkfoods.com/search_results ... amTxt=4117
2- Have an Indian/Mediterranean food store close by? In India Molasses is called Black Honey and is stronger and cheaper than most molasses.
