A little Guidance needed from the Gurus

I'm currently fermenting my first wash. I recieved a few turbo yeast packets for free so I figured try the freebie first and if it all goes to hell, chalk it up as a learning experience.

I spit the pack in half and it's fermenting in two 3.5gal buckets. This has helped to keep the temp around 21C the entire time. The last day or so I have noticed the airlock slowing down and I want to check the SG. I have a mash hydrometer.

I just want to know if it is ok to pull the lid off this thing. I have read about spoiled washes due to oxygen so I'm a little wary. I have seen some wash instuctions on the site calling for stirring the wash and things like that. Whats the benifit to this? I have just let mine sit and do its thing for about 6 days now. Just curious where to go from here. Sparkloid is in the mail on its way and I should be getting a 6 gal glass carboy in the next few days as well

"I have read about spoiled washes due to oxygen"
its usually not o2 you have to worry about but infections ,or bacteria or wild yeast.
dont stir unless you have a reason to do so..most work just fine without

Is it only when storing low wines that you need to worry about oxygen then?

oxygen makes yeast reproduce,so technically if you stir o2 into wash it can keep reproducing yeast instead of making alcohol.but this makes a diferance on the type of yeast. as for oxygenating the "wine" we dont worry about this to much as usually it doesn't sit around that long.
