Hello All,

My name is Mcfly, I've been browsing through the forums now for a few weeks and finally decided to join up and create an account. I've never distilled anything before but im looking at getting into this hobby. I've been brewing beer for a few years now (mostly trappist and abbey ales) I have a few 5, 3 and 1 gallon oak barrels that I've used for my beer that I think could be put to a different use. I don't own a still yet and I don't want to build one yet because I plan to move in the near future and would prefer to wait until then to build a decent sized one. However I would like to purchase a smaller still just to get the hang of distilling and partake in the hobby until then.

If you don't want to build one there are plenty of places to buy one depending on your budget. However, I wouldn't go anything smaller than 5 gallons and even that is pushing it. Go a little bit bigger and save yourself spending more money on a new boiler later on. Read up and good luck.

Why do you recommended no less than 5 gallons?

A 5 gallon boiler is still small IMO. When you look at the low ABV of a wash the final product amount is going to be quite small. You also have to make cuts on that small amount. Not allot left to enjoy and it harder to cut the small amounts. Hope that helps.
