Well just started my first mash ever and so far so good. I did a lot of research prior to making it and used several different inputs to make mine. It has been fermenting for 5 days now and have all kinds of bubbles with it starting to clear at the top and settle to the bottom. Curiosity got the best of me so I popped the lid off my 7.5 gallon fermenter and took a look and man it smells good. Smells just like beer. I tried to take a reading with a hydrometer but haven't figured that out yet. Plan on running it in about 2 or 3 days and plan on using the stops bubbling and clear method to know when it is ready. I will let you guys know how it worked out. Below is the recipe I used.
5 gallons distilled water heated to 95 degrees
5 lbs flaked corn
8 lbs white sugar
4 packets of highly active yeast
Mash smells good

You and I are at about the same place with our wash. I started UJSSM about the same time and will run it this weekend. Good luck with your run....keep us posted.

Looking good, just keep the peeping to a minimum and you will be fine.
The hydrometer is fairly easy to use but you need a fairly clear ferment for it to work. You best bet is to wait until the surafec is clear of floating stuff then sanitize it and lower it slowly into the fermenter. Once it's in most of the way give it a twist to spin it. This will spin off the CO^2 bubbles so it will float at the proper height. As it slows down and stops bobbing up & down just read the markings on the side. Give it a few more spins if you have to to read it.
