Used Oak Barrels

I have two oak barrels that are used. One has been used for a merlot and the other was used for a cabrinet. I am wondering if I can use these. I was thinking of using them to age but was going to add one inch char'd oak blocks. I dont know if the previous contents would ruin the flavor or enhance. I am not sure if this would cause too much oak flavour at once. any suggestions?
