Has anyone tried to use Malt-O-Meal for a mash or part of a mash. I started reading some of the ingredients when i was in wallyworld yesterday. Malted barley is the second ingredient and its got a lot of vitamins in it which will help the yeast. I may give it a try. I did a malt-o-meal search on HD and did not come up with anything. This looks like a good start to a simple recipe. What do you guys think?
Here is a pic of it.

hmm... I've thought about this before too. well niacin is just vitamin b3 which all b vitamins are good for yeast health and folic acid is also a b vitamin , I think 9 which should also help. as for the iron I think it wouldn't be very different from using well water in fact I think that's part of what makes the water in bourbon county so good. all in all I don't think that the added vitamins would be a hindrance but something to consider is that malted barley is only the second ingredient. wheat farina is number 1, wheat farina ( cream of wheat) is pure starch and I don't know if the barley would have a high enough DP to convert the farina by itself. that barley malt isn't made for brewing and may very well be DP neutral
I added a cup of Malt-o-Meal to my last cooked corn/sugar mash. Prestige WD yeast, OG 1.070. 5 gallons. My fermentation lab (garage) was cooler (50-60) and the wash was heated to (65-70). It finished clear in 6 days. So there were too many variables to say if it had much effect.
I didn't notice any difference in taste. I think it it helped the speed of fermentation. It is not cheap, $5/20 oz package.
I have 2lbs of indian head white corn meal that may go good with this. I am going to have to try it out. I know it's not enough to convert so I will probably add 4 to 5 pounds of sugar to a 5 gallon mash. I will try it this week and post back.
