Thermometers - How Do They Work?

Post by Copper Tone »

I'm taking my sweet time easing into this craft and this is an amazing resource. My copper is cut to size, and all in place...assembly awaits. I can add thermometers I assume buy installing one in the boiler that will measure temperatures of the wash. But I've seen my kind of 5 gal still have another near the cap at the top of the collar. Is that to measure vapor temperature? I'm not sure. Any advice on types, installation recommendations or anything else is appreciated.

Can I just drill a small hole and drop one in?

Also dont forget to stop by the Welcome section and tell us about your goals/plans/what still ur making/pictures/what brought you here!

Remember, thermometers are useless junk in potstills so if ur building a pot still go ahead and toss that idea out the window

Please take this with a pinch of salt. You don't NEED a thermometer on a pot still, that is for sure, but it can be convenient. I use one for a specific purpose. It is at the very top of the vapour path and it serves mainly 1 function. On a strip run it tells me when to switch off the power.

There are other methods, volume collected, hydrometer and parrot, pressing your tongue against the vapour path  It is up to you.

I use a combination of a parrot and hydrometer, and the thermometer - but both are optional.

This is my usual spirit run method:

Discard anything below 77 deg C as foreshots.
Above 75% on the hydrometer is heads.
Hearts are collected down to 65% or 55%
From then up to 98 deg C is tails.

Temperatures are VAPOUR temperature. Wash temperature in the boiler is only of any value if you do a phased warm up sequence. Boiling temperature has no practical value at all.
