Question: 1 or 2 valves on a Nixon/Stone

Post by Evan »

I know this topic should go on the Mentors forum but it appears to be locked. I've read differing opinions on how many valves are necessary on a Nixon/Stone off-set reflux still. If I have only one valve for the output, should I have the inlet for the output a little bit higher than the inlet for the reflux? I've been using 3/8'' tubing; should the reflux line be thinner, maybe 1/4''?

You got backwards, The inlet for the ruflux should be a little higher in the collection area than the inlet for the take off. As you restrict the take off the liquid level will rise till it all pours down the reflux tube. This will make your reflux "self adjusting" as what you don't take off will go down the reflux tube.
When I built mine I put 2 valves on it, but if I did it again I would go this route. I used 3/8" copper tubing for both so I can't help on the size question. Hope that helps

1 valve for output. Then have your reflux tube above that, so it refluxes everything that isn't collected. The smaller " reservoir" the better. Won't smear cuts that way.

No problem, if it was the other way around it would never fill up to the take off, Good luck to ya!

Ive been giving this allot of thought recently.
If I wer eto build another I'd do it with a single takeoff that tees off to the reflux. The only valve would be below the reflux tee in the takeoff line. If you close the valve you have 100% reflux, if you open it part way you have 50/50.
I can't figure how to draw this out so you'll have to use your imagination.

I have seen it done that way bellybuster, It looks like it would work well also. I'll see if I can find a picture.
