Sadie, I don’t bother. They don’t survive the scarification process, nor do they seem to have any effect on distillation. If you’re buying whole grain, they’re probably in there already anyway. I’m sure that’s how they got into my pantry.

Well, I WAS thinking of adding barley and oats to the wheat and making B.O.W. Weevil whiskey. But since I decided to use the cereals instead, that’s not going to work. I’m thinking maybe the weevils of drink.

Heyyyy,me too. I'm really liking that recipe,I up'd the oats to 25 percent like you said. Can't wait to sip it with the extra oats. The last stuff was so good I drank it white. I'll roast next time to see the difference 🍻

Finally got my spirit run done. Been working on this since the end of January. Three stripping runs for one spirit run and I ended up with 10 gallons at 125 proof. I was lucky and found 4 gallons of low wines that I had forgot about so that meant one less stripping run. It is all made from my DME and cane sugar recipe.

Going to do some oak aging experiments with it. Toasted and charred vs just charred. I want more color and flavor than what I got from my 400F toasted sticks with no char.

I was able to try out my new components that lets me run 2, 3 inch bubble plates. Typically I would just do pot still mode with some copper mesh and no reflux. Then made my own 2” sieve plates and it was too slow, so I broke down and bought some 3 inch bubble plates and a couple sight glasses. Man she definitely pumps out the distillate. Now I think I have first hand experience on what column flooding is. I was trying to get my head temp higher so I cranked the heat. I could see vapor flow coming through the downcomer on my second plate and the first plate was pretty dry.

I was running a boiler charge of low wines and could only take my 5500W heater to 60% or it would flood. I did do one stripping run with the some components and was able to rip her at 75% and hold 187F head temp. Now I really see the value of a plate still doing a one and done for bourbons and whiskey. :)

On edit: Oh, and I finalized my plans for my malt kiln. It will have the capacity to do one bushel of any type of grain. Now I have to get off my wallet and buy all the materials. Picked up a 50 pound sack of corn from a local farmer this morning. A week ago I picked up a couple sacks of barley from a feed store. The feed store people didn’t know if it was 2-row or 6-row so I called the company that makes it and found out that they planted some fields of malting barley so I am hoping to score some of that in July.

Yes. Pretty easy to make and I like it. The oats are for a very improved mouth feel.

I use a 10 kg bag of corn meal and a 2.5 kg bag of rolled oats. Yellow label yeast at about 32*c for the pitch and ferment.

Mix of Feints, a failed bourbon and a bit of UJSSM

So first run as such 35L at 18abv run over 4 plates

Heat up was at 4kw till base of the still got warm
Down to 3kw till boiler sound changed
Down to 2.7 and loaded the plates, all the plates loaded well.
Loaded plates for 15 minutes, then took a litre at 1.7 lph, I used the bypass valve to run the first litre and couldn't really get my flow right, I think I'll set up another needle valve that I can isolate for that job.
abv was about 92

Started collecting at 2.7kw
Deflagameter was running 600ml per minute
Collecting 2.1lph at 92

I got about half way through and changed settings, I collected 300ml as a change jar to make sure everything had adjusted

I went to 2.15kw
Deflagameter on 380ml per minute
Collecting 2.1lph at 90 and a bit

Did a side by side taste and the lower abv sample tasted a lot headsier, sharper and a just not right.
A bit like a smeared pot still run.

So back to the 2.7 setting I went

A few other things
Product temp is about 25c
Deflagameter outlet water at the end of the 2m section of hose is 55c
Boiler head space was 81 when the plates loaded, collected just over 5.5l at 92 at the moment and the temp is 90c.
Just starting to pick up some condensation on the bottom glass now

All in all really happy how the new still runs, just got to learn to drive now

Made my first OEG. Did everything exact but didn’t macerate first. Iv got some sitting now and will see the difference. My citrus taste seems a little strong. From what iv seen in other spirits it can mellow so I'll give it the time the recipe says.
Off the still my fleshly picked juniper shines through nicely, great aroma. Even momma bear likes the smell.
Super happy and this was a no brainer thanks to Odin.
I'll def be making more.
