A strange misfortune

Post by Jday »

I have successfully completed quite a few sugar based recipes so I decided to give an AG a go. I used Nchooch's recipe and it turned out better than what I could have imagined. It is a fantastic recipe, and a great intro to all grain brewing. So like I said it all went great until..... It turns out the toasted/charred white oak sticks that I used are the exact length of the inside diameter of the jars I used to age the liquer in. All I can figure is the stick got saturated, sank and wedged into the jar sideways then expanded and busted the side of the jar out. I did my best made a great product .I put it away in a safe spot. 3 days later I have a dribble of whisky and some broken glass. Chalking this up to bad luck and a lesson learned.

I feel for ya . Did it happen to me I would feel like I just woke up and found out someone had crapped in my Easter basket . Imagine , however , how many of us you have saved from the same fate by being a generous soul and sharing this misfortune

yup...

I've got a gallon wine jug that still has a barrel mill infusion spiral stuck in it... It went in just fine when it was dry, but It won't come out after being soaked for a couple months....

sorry for your loss.

@ the OP: done this kind think b4 too! I made wooden stoppers from toasted manuka for several mini-whisky bottles (250ml) and as they took up moisture from the booze and the environment they expanded and shattered the necks of the bottles pissing my hooch everywhere
@ JD: chuck on the dash of your car on a hot day, uncapped. Your car will smell brilliant and the oak should dry out and shrink again and be removable.
Where has all the rum gone? . . .
