subject: methanol

I'm new to this, and I really don't want to go blind or retarded, and was wondering what the best way for removing methanol and all that other crap. I've heard of using the boiling point, and or using activated charcoal filters. Which way should I go for?

Methanol comes off the very first thing with the foreshots and some of the heads so the rule of thumb is to throw out the first 1/3 of a cup or so when using a pot still. Normally you'll see the methanol come off at under 70C so everything after that will be ok to put into your still and run again in your next distillation. From what I've read if you are using a sugar wash or a grain/sugar wash you shouldn't get all that much meth comming off. Methanol is mainly a product of pectin being turned into alcohol by the yeast so the less pectin(like in fruit)the less meth. There are several good web sites that can explain this better then I can here so do a google search and do some reading and you'll find out alot about distilling and such. Like I said, just throw out the first 1/3 cup or so for the first two distillations and you should be ok, at least you'll have so little meth left that it won't hurt you. Hope this has been some help. Talk to ya'll later. TN.Frank
