I was stuck between a perf and bubble cap design or OD's majic flute. So here is an Idea I came up with that kinda uses a little of everything and would make the flute sectional for easier clening. This is more of a bubble cap design and I would like your thoughts on it. Do you think this design will work, all comments welcom.

Also I was thinking OD's design was nice but fabrication intensive. This would simplify the build and get the same result I would think and there is no confusion on hole placemant or quantity of holes as you would have in a perf plate and a little easier on the builders that just dont have the tecnical skills to fab up the majik flute and this would be more cost efective.

OD's original design used a perforated plate and 4in Dephlegmater made from 2 Reducers. It was also put together using a propane torch and soft solder. No hard solder was used on the original build.
Cant get simpler than that IMO...

I reckon the bubble-cap should be flush with the plate so that the vapour is pushed through the slots with pressure rather than acting more like a mini-thumper...

The single bubble cap has been done elsewhere with good results, I think OD did one as well...bieng a bubble cap you will need either weir walls or a liquid tight seal to the walls of the column. Not a big issue but a detail that needs to be addressed. Somewhere I have a drawing of a cap with an internal down commer.....

Actually that illustration is incorrect. My first dephlagmater had the bottom reducer pointing upwards not downwards so both reducers faced the same way, and the whole assembly fitted onto a 4"column.

Anyone building a Flute I would encourage to build the drop in dephlagmater as used on Flute MkII. The problem with the original dephlag on Flute 1 is that it was prone to airlocks in the top of the dephlagmater as the exit for cooling water was below the actual top of the condenser, an area where an airlock could occur, the drop in condenser with the exit directly on the top eliminates that problem. I would also encourage builders to use the 3 way control valve I used on FluteMkII as this automatically balances the flow between the dephlagmater and the product condenser.

Cost for these things is somewhat irrelevent. They pay for themselfs pretty quick. Better than store bought product, you can compare them to buying store bought and do some sums.
You'll get a heap of 1/5ths each batch.

Wow Billy, you've got some great talent following your thread. Get the copper and tools out and start a building....

If I was doing modular sections mate, I'd put the plate between the sections rather than solder them.in, that way, you can take them in and out when you want to try different plate styles, gives you alot of freedom. I use single caps and love them.also, havnt tried perf plates.so can't really compare. That's just my opinion though. The old.fellas know.whats best . I attached a pic of my plates, much the same as everyone that does them I think, there easy to make too!. Good luck.
