All about grains. Malting, smoking, grinding and other preparations.
Which grains are hot, which are not.

effect of changing grain amounts?

Post by MikeyT »

For my first several runs (enough to make 2 gallons of hearts at 60%), I used this recipe: (using a pot still)

12.5 lbs cracked corn, 2.5 lbs rye flour, 8.5 lbs ground 6-row malted barley. (total water added about 7.5 gallons Ozarka Spring Water)

For economy sake, I'm considering changing the above to:
15 lbs cracked corn, 2.5 lbs ground rye, 6 lbs ground 6-row malted barley.
(filtered tapwater)

What effect would this have on the taste/flavor & alcohol produced in the final product?

For my first runs I added the rye and half the barley to the corn before boiling. As per Uncle Jesse, I'm going to add the rye after the boil for my next runs. And, maybe add only 1/3 of the barley before the boil.

The first 2 gallons is VERY good stuff, but expensive to make! Each run produced about 3.5 pints of hearts. Foreshots thrown away and tails added to next run. Hearts started at 70% and when it got down to 45% I called it quits on the hearts.

And, I'm not sure what adding the barley before or after the boil accomplishes???? Can someone explain?
