I am leaving toward the end of the month for 10 days to vacation in the San Antonio area, will rent a car and will obviously do the river walk, and some of the other attractions (open for suggestions). Also wondering if any members from that area have some must see distilleries I can tour?

First time I was there for basic training. Only got one day pass in town. And the second time was to have a huge kidney stone removed. Spent 4 days in the hospital. So I can't help you much. But the river walk was cool.

An hour drive up US281 outside of SA toward Johnson city is a distillery named Garrison Brothers (http://www.garrisonbros.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow ) check this site for tour info. I'm about 2 hrs away but haven't had the chance to stop in for a tour yet. I was on the riverwak last weekend and u must visit Coyote Ugly bar and Dicks last resort ( don't get offended, go with it , it's ment to be fun, you'll see) have fun!

Go see the Alamo. Catch the Imax movie then go take a walk through. Riverwalk is a great place for an evening or two.

Some great suggestions, keep them coming. Drinkingdog, it's the life one lives when retired with 3 incomes and in a year my wife will be old enough to qualify for SS.

Remember the Alamo! Went there last year, did the river walk too. Great place. Have fun.

I second Dick's Last Resort. I miss that place. Spent 9 months at Ft. Sam Houston. Unfortunately most of that time (free time, anyways) was spent drunk. Back then I wasn't concerned about how booze was made, no distillery suggestion here. Sorry. Enjoy your trip!

Welcome to South Texas!!! I'll PM you with my contact information and would be happy to offer any site seeing information. As for Garrison Brothers distillery, the tour is kinda cool, the have 2 continuous column stills, huge fermetation room. Too bad their whiskey is not that great and sells for $80. The great thing about it is it is located in the heart of Texas wine country and you can hit seveal of the wineries to taste. Let me know if you are interested in this. There are several distilleries that are located in or around San Antonio that you can see. The is Rebecca Creek distillery, they offer both whiskey and vodka. http://www.rebeccacreekdistillery.com/ Another option is Ranger Creek, which I have posted about here before. They are both a distillery and brewry, I believe tours are only done on Saturdays. http://www.drinkrangercreek.com/. There is also Cinco Vodka, which is done by Azar Distilling, I am not sure if there are open to the public for tours, but I have met the owner in the past and he told me they would do private tours with prior notice. http://www.cincovodka.com/home2.aspx?i=0 Further out from San Antonio, you could also visit Bone Spirits http://bonespirits.com/. If you are thinking about going to Austin (about 1.5 hours away), let me know I can list several distilleries there.

As for downtown, are you staying there? There are tons or retuarants, but many are just tourist traps. If you have a car and feel like traveling around there are plenty of other wonderful options. Let me know. Thanks

Dicks last resort is, well... dicks... Its fun in its way.

I'd recommend the Esquire bar in downtown SA. Old place... Been years since I've been there, but the back balcony way above the river was cool. I think its the longest bar in Texas or something like that.

If you make it out to Bone Spirits, be sure to get some BBQ at Zimmerhansels in Smithville.

New Braumfels is just down the road a piece, drive out there, rent an intertube and float downthe Guadalupe River. It's white water for several miles, great fun.

You guys are great, we only have 10 days and the suggestions by members will make our short stay there better I am sure! Now I just have to figure out how to fit it all in while there. I think next week I will sit down with my wife just before we leave and try to map it out a bit, of course plans always change while traveling. Again thank you all!
