Many people do their best thinking there... This hobby takes a lot of thinking and inspiration.

And of course, some of us are full of ....

My first two years or so of running my still. Was in the master bathroom. While I sat on the Shitter.

Wilderness, do you r e a l l y want to know what most of the people on here are like in real life?

When I was 9 years old I ran out from our out house and chased my first bear. It's my other hobby.

Just what was the first thing was it that you chased while bear ?

My dad always prayed while on the shitter. Don't know if it helped the process or if he was multi tasking.

I've tried changing my avatar a couple of times but receive complaints and end up switching back...

Not sure how many others did but I grew up using outhouses and latrines when visiting extended family...

As a kid growing up we had a cabin at a lake several hours from our house. My dad built a cabin and we had an outhouse in the back yard. Years later I visited to reminisce and went to the cabin that is now a small house. The new owner was having trouble with the sewer and asked if I new where the septic tank was located. I said that was way after my time!

Yep grandma had a fully functioning bathroom. But no one used it. You used the two hole out back. With the Sears catalog.

The cabin or family had when growing up. Had a storage shed/crapper. It had an old blue water train crapper in it. That didn't last very long. Went back to honey pots and the long walk to the woods.

When my older relatives back in S. Cack finally got inside plumbing, they had it put out on the back porch. They just couldn't get past the idea of having a crapper inside the house.

HaHa I think that was the reason no one ever used my grandmas bathroom. It was actually the back porch that had been closed in. For us it wasn't even thought about. We just knew to go out back. But if you took someone new with you. It was kinda hard to explain why they had to go out back tm the two hole. When there was a perfectly good working bathroom sitting right there.

She also had running water in the kitchen. But we still fetched water from the well pump. Fer the dishes and cookin. I have fond memories of that well. Coldest water ever. Even on the hottest day. And the best tasting water I have ever had. I've had my share of wells over the years. But none of them would compare to hers.

Mr. P., that sounds so much like my Grandma's situation. She didn't have an outhouse, but the toilet was in a little room on the far end of the back porch. The only thing in there was the crapper. It was very old tech with the flush valve made into the seat. When you sat on it, water would start filling a big galvanized tank behind and above the toilet and then when you finished your business and stood up, the water would automatically release from the tank and flush the toilet.

There was also only one water faucet in the whole house - in the kitchen - and no hot water. she had an old fashioned kerosene cooking stove and heated her hot water in a 2 gallon tin kettle. My older brother and I would have to lug a 5 gallon can up to the corner grocery store for a kerosene refill - no small feat for a couple of little kids.

My folks were so poor (but hardworking; grandpa refused gov't assistance) that we didn't have latrines, just the grass.

Don't have overalls. Am toofless and do somewhat look like a hillbilly. But I have no real hills around here. I live in the city. And I really just look like the biker that I am.

Man my grandma would get the guvment cheese and butter. I really kinda liked it. But I didn't have to eat it all the time. And anything she cooked was good as hell anyway. Tough ol cookie she was. Lived by herself on a 160 acre farm. Always had 50 head of cattle. She was born in 1899 and passed in 1986. Up till the first part of 86 she would walk that 160 acres gathering them cattle every day. All the meet she ate came from her farm or the neighbors. Who had pigs. They would trade beef for pork. So they could have something different. Chicken and eggs a huge garden and many fruit trees. She had a friend that would come pick her up in a horse and buggy to go to town weekly. And we always had a freezer full of the best damn beef you ever had. Man I miss those days. And there is a reason we don't live as long anymore. Wish I could afford to live like she did. It cost to damn much anymore.

You do good in person PP! Stand up fella in my Book and that is coming from a Detroit born Yank!that has reverted to the father north.

Hell all we had was a buckskin chair with the seat worn out and a hole in it over a small pit that kept moving round the thicket. Corn cobs were never just thrown away. Ifn you rub them hard intween both fists they soften up a lot. Now we got a toilet seat offn the rear hitch on the truck. Mobile port-o-let!

someone else started using my old avatar so i up loaded this photo of a painting. It is a painting of my stepsons girlfriends Grandfather, it hung in her mothers house and I thought it was classic (should make a point of meeting that old fella)
reading ya stories i can't help thinking of something I had long forgotten my grandpa said. We were having a BBQ and he reckon the world had gone back the front, eating outside and going to the shitter inside, just weren't right, He was like that, I remember when they got the first colour TV and we all came over to see it having never seen a colour one, well he didn't like it one bit, just plain unnatural he reckoned (dad says to mum after yeah well old Edgar always did see life in black and white mum growled ha what about your father)

Good story, thecroweater... My great grandmother lived right next door to us and never had an indoor toilet but, instead, had a deluxe two holer complete with vent windows and magazine/newspaper rack... She could never figure out how they got all those little people in that box whenever she saw a television set... She sure loved her snuff though...
