Distillers Turbo Yeast in Beer

Firstly allow me to introduce myself. I’m a brewer whose skill leaves a lot to be desired.

I was in my brewing shop the other day and stumbled across Still Spirits Turbo yeast that can ferment 6Kg of sugar in 48 hours if at the ideal temperature (25 degrees centigrade)

I was making some of the Coopers stout and filled four demijohns with the yeast that came with the kit and one with the turbo yeast. I was nearly sick when I smelt the turbo yeast which has kind of put me off the stout with the turbo yeast in it. The stout should be black however the turbo yeast demijohn stout is brown. It should be about 8% after fermentation is complete.

I guess my questions are-

-Is this safe- presumably in distilling impurities are less of an issue as they should get removed

-Will it taste okay-it certainly doesn’t look how it should

-Is there anything else I should know?

Thanks

You surely don't want to be making beer with Turbo Yeast... In fact, as has been discussed ad nauseum, turbo yeast should only be used with sugar and water, if at all... When combined with grains or cereals it will produce too much heat which will induce off tastes and smells - as you have discovered... The problem is the overabundance of chemical nutrients in the yeast mix... From now on just pass by the turbo yeast as though it doesn't exist...
