copper still queation

Post by turtleson »

I'm not new to the site. Haven't posted in quite a while. Couldn't remember my username so hence first post. Anywsy I'm getting back into distilling as a hobby. Use a stainless pot with a copper pipe run through a condensing jacket. Very basic, but finished product isn't bad.

I've decided to build a copper still and trying to figure out if I should build a reflux column or just send it through a thumper. The still will be about 15 gallons. Not too big. Any suggestions appreciated.

BTW, once I get all the metal, I'll post before, during, and after pics.

I think depending on what you would like to distill would determine what kind of still you should make. There are a lot of threads on the forums about what type of stills are better for what you are trying to accomplish. If you are trying to make whiskey or rums (anything that has more flavor) then the pot still is obviously the better choice. That being said if you are looking for neutral spirits then the reflux would be a better choice. Some people have kind of 'hybrid' builds with say semi quazi pot stills that can have a reflux column option available. I do not know much about that but I am sure others here do. Keep browsing the forums and do your research before you commit to your build! Keep us informed.
