It was kind of lame if anyone wants to know. They really only covered running a car on ethanol, and exploding stills.

Well I got through half hour of it. I couldn't take any more though. I thought it was going to be a science show, but it was nothing of the sort. They couldn't even read the results properly. Must be the third time I have tried to watch one of them shows. So much promise, but the show don't deliver.

I was really hoping they would address the whole going blind myth. Hell that all started when the government purposely poisoned industrial ethanol with methanol. That myth has been around for almost 100 years.

Frick and Frack dont have the balls to go on national television and tell everyone the government poisoned to death thousands of us during prohibition.

YUP. Them assholes were looking for shock appeal, not bringing truth to light. They actually perpetuated myth and nonsense.

That a leaking still is very dangerous. Don't know how many have come here to argue that a leaking still isn't going to do anything. If I remember correctly. Someone around here was suppose to do some of the very same tests. Never seen any more about it. Which is often the case when test actually prove that person wrong. You don't ever see their outcome.

I don't know what you all thought would happen on that show. If you have ever watched the show. You would have known that's exactly what they do.

I for one hope this episode will help educate some of the dumbasses out there. Like the jackass selling the air cooled pot stills on eBay. That was told they are not safe. But didn't want to listen. Because we told him his design was an unsafe piece of crap.

This hobby is or can be dangerous. And more people need to know that.

+1,000 on Mr Piss . Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades . The margin for error here is more akin to gator wrestling and slapping rattle snakes ..... Much better to get it right the first time :)

Sometimes they have some interesting crap on that show. But last night's was just retarded. You can force an explosion on pretty much anything if you create the right environment.

If ya wanna use this as a scare tactic for beginners then fine, but this was hardly a situation that anyone with even a trace of common sense would allow to happen. The MASSIVE leak that they simulated using 100% abv alcohol in an almost airtight room, then waiting until the exactly right time to light a rag on fire is highly unlikely to say the least.
Any leaks that we would encounter would not be anywhere near this size without being very obvious and immediately addressed. Furthermore I think everyone has some ventilation (even though it may not be a recommended amount) and even though a fire may occur under the right circumstances I highly doubt an explosion is likely. Even the "EXPERTS" had to go to extreme lengths to get this one to work.

If it keeps people from doing it that shouldn't be doing it in the first place then I say good. :sarcasm:

I'm all for safety but misleading people into thinking that they are gonna blow their house up if they have a pinhole leak in a solder joint is a little further than I'm willing to go.

I hope, (and think), you were intending to be sarcastic.

Yes, it's dangerous. So is deep frying a turkey

And every restaurant in the country has a pilot light that burns 24/7 and connected to a relatively large fuel source. But ya don't see restaurants blowing up every day!

I was impressed by the fact that even when they blew it up their stainless milk can still wasn't damaged at all. The vapor flashed around the still and a stream of fire blew out of the hole for a few seconds bit it quickly blew itself out and no damage was done to the still. I expected them to do the whole exploding water heater with alcohol thing but they didn't talk much about the still surviving either. I was very disappointment in this episode because I would have liked to see the going blind thing busted and the old car would have run just fine if they backed out the jets a bit but really no true moonshiner would be selling 198 proof if he can sell 100-110 for the same money and nobody would be wasting it to run a car except as a last resort. All in all it was once again a very disappointing mythbusters and I doubt I will be watching any more episodes any time soon.

I'm all for scare tactics. Call me what you want. But how many threads have you read where the operator only got about half as much product from a run then they should have. Because they had a vapor leak. I have read quite a few. Go read through the mistake thread. How many stills have been on fire. You can say it wouldn't happen to anyone with any common since. All you want. Things happen. Even to those that are experienced.

Larry we have actually had a few blow up around here recently.

And I have to say. Having the same conversation going in two threads at once. Sucks. And is kinda a waste.

Damn Im sick of this thread(s) already. Points have all been made. And we're all correct. The show did us harm in the public eye. The show did us good from a safety awareness perspective. They are showbiz people out for shock appeal and makin a buck by blowin shit up.

Can we talk about yeast or something for christs sake.

You trying to bait me into calling you Princess Mr. P? Not gonna happen in this lifetime. Too much respect for ya. Scare tactics are fine as long as you keep them within reason.

Leaks can happen to anyone and vapor can escape for sure i.e. reflux/product condenser failure. The point I am trying to make is that although it "could" happen it is not likely. They had to have "the perfect storm" to actually get an explosion. You would have to dump a lot of vapor in a small area with little to no ventilation for this to happen. I just can't imagine this going unnoticed.
If you leave your still unattended you are playing with fire. If you have no ventilation you are playing with fire. I hope we all know better than this.
Fires on the other hand are much more frequent because it is doesn't take much more than a spilled container and a stray spark to start one. If we are diligent we can prevent most and deal with one should it arise.
Now Jimbo wants to talk about yeast and I don't blame him

I agree and I for one am done with both. I hate to argue... especially with a mentor (and yes you're still a mentor no matter what color your jacket is).

I have been using Hodgesons mill bakers yeast from the grocery store and it has been very good with ujssm. I had one completely clear in a week
