Using reflux/fractionating as pot still for whiskey?

Post by sedso10 »

Hey everyone - I have built what is essentially a fractionating still and my question is if I run the still without manually refluxing (via valve or cooling water flow) can it be used as a pot still for making whiskey?

Yes.

Remove the packing, make sure the column is insulated, and shut off any induced reflux and you essentially have a pot still with a long lyne arm.
Many of us make one still fulfill the purpose of two. (Although purists may build two stills because they don't like the reflux from the slight cooling that occurs in the column.)
