Any one see any reason why this won't work?
2" threaded hole in barrel lid, adapted down to 1 1/2", water filled trap. May cover top of output hole with something to keep crap out of the water trap. Cost a total of $8.00 for fitting.

It may keep enough water in the trap to do what you want but do not be upset if it does not. You could have used the smaller hole and made a deeper trap by using ells and taller stacks. If all else fails, put the cap back in, take the lock ring off and place the lid on it with a weight to hold it down. It will be fine without a trap.

Or go with a ping pong ball airlock.

Trapped type airlocks usually need an increase in pipe diameter to allow the gas to push past the liquid without pushing out the liquid. I would not be surprised if you got a lot of splashing out the end.

I've got to agree with PP, if i were to go back and rebuild my airlocks, i would probably go with ping pong ball style locks.

I was actually going to do the ping pong ball style, but unfortunately they were out of ping pong balls local, so plan B it is... We will see how it works, I just pitched the yeast, so hopefully in a couple hours we will see some action.

If you have any more pipe, extend the vertical riser downstream side of the p-trap, make it tall enough and it will not splash out, but watch out for water in the trap splashing back into the wash, unless you increase the length on the upstram side of the trap too.

This batch is only 13 gallons, I guess we will see how violent it gets. Some extensions on the pipe might not be a bad thing..

I use 3/8" rubber hose an a 2 liter bottle on my 40 gal. drum and it works like a champ so i made some out of 20 oz bottles for my smaller drums.The bigger 1 gets to roll'n real good on the 2nd day.

I do not use one at all. I guess we don't have the nastiest here in the Flatwoods that the rest of you worry about. I thought ping pong balls for the longest were for tying to a string with tape and swung for archery practice.

+1 on the tubing and water bottles! cheap, easy and effective!

So far it hasn't done anything. I think it is stalled. it is only about 60-65 deg in that room, so that probably isn't helping. I may have to try the bottle next time.
