my first ferment (sweet feed)

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

The really nice thing about the sweetfeed recipe is it tastes pretty darned good, and when you get a good handle on it you can modify it into an all grain recipe by leaving out the molasses and sugar and using malted grains to do your conversion. That's how I learned to do All Grains, and it lets you do a little taste comparing with similar grain bills. I can see by your excitement you are going to be hooked.

I need to get another fermenter also, I let it bubble for a week then rack it into a carboy to settle, so I can use the fermenter for the next batch.

I love how easy this recipe is, others are much more involved.. I just hope it tastes good.

that's the reason why I choose after reading and reading I looked at all the recipes' and for a noob this look the easiest. I would let you know tomorrow how it goes and tastes if I don't screw it up on the cuts but like I said I been reading and reading but you can have all the ideas in the world but until you actually practices those ideas you won't know how to do it you will have just theory! so hope all goes well.

Run yours? Ran mine today, didn't turn out very good for me, got around 32oz of product out of a 4+gal wash. Highest proof was only 80ish, disappointed. Hope yours turns out better. Don't understand why it didn't do good for me.

I just started my first distilling ferment also. Sweet Feed just like yours, and the wort tastes pretty good. 10 gallon volume(13 gal boiler), 14lb white sugar, 15lb sweet feed, EC-1118 yeast. Excited!

Sounds like it may have not been done yet. Not using a Thumper right?

no thumper on mine no. I have my second batch to run tomorrow, its a little below 1.0 on the hydrometer, and I kept the house warmer this time too. I am considering putting a thumper in if I cant get anything better. Also going to try a different yeast.

Thanks

mine just a basic pot still made out of a 15.5 keg and 2" column but anyway I came out with about 3 quarts of 100 don't know if that good or bad quantity wise but quality very good. Work on my next batch and trying some ec1118 this time. see which taste better.

started my next batch last night this morning bubbling like crazy. I learned that +close enough don't cut it. I will explain what I am talking about. I read and read. I forget the most important part, PATIENCE! I took my hydrometer reading when I started then after about 4 days and it still hadn't dropped where I wanted . I know I was looking for about .999 or somewhere in that ballpark but a rookie mistake is thinking a few points didn't matter so like a noob I went ahead and ran it and only got about 3 quarts 100proof so I will go by the book and wait till if finishes.
