Hello Distillers,

I want to share you my way of getting a peated whisky.

My first experiment was a great succes and it really gives that typical islay taste to the whisky.

What you need:
A can that can be closed, but put a little hole in the top of it!
A stove or a fire source.. ( i used my homemade penny stove. ) But only do this outside!!!
Oak sticks that fit inside the can.
Peat moss

So here's what i did.
1. Put a layer of 3 cm of peat moss in the can and compress this to the bottom.
2. Put the oak sticks in the can on top of the peat moss.
3. Close the can
4. Set the can above the fire and let it burn for something like 20 min.

If everything went right the oak sticks should look toasted and maybe even a little bit scorched if this isnt the case put in back in the fire with the can closed.

So the only step you have to do now is let the whisky age with the ''peated'' oak sticks and you have a nice peated whisky in the end!

I hope this information is useful for the people that want to make a nice peated whisky without having to smoke the grains with peat.

Cheers! And go for it!

Hey Stavirish,

Are you using gardening-type peat moss? Or do you happen to live in a boggy area?
