Column packing denisty?

Post by HyperandDrunk »

Hi there.

My VM still packing is approximately 150cm tall and filled with copper mash.
It produces super pure 95-96% but it is doing so rather slowly. (1-2 drops a seccond)

I was wondering if I added even more copper and compressed it to fit the column if that would make it produce 95% faster due to a larger surface area?

Thanks.

You are close to the limits of your ability now. It can be added as long as you can breath through it . It may be something to try as well as removing some of what you have there now.

What is the diameter of your column as that relates to speed!

When ya breath through it, do you go "WHOOO" or "whhhhh" The latter will normally be a better packing density.

Probably should be a bit faster, I had a 2" VM and with a 10 gallon charge it took me 12-15 hours to run. With my 4" CM I can do an 11 gallon charge in 3-4 hours with similar purity.

Haha, probably the latter.

I will try to pack it harder and add some more to check if that will make it faster.

A big question concerning your flow is: How much power/energy are you putting to the boiler?
Your column may be able to maintain that level of purity with a faster flow. I find with my CM column that after I dial in the cooling flow to the dephlagmator, product flow is controlled with power to the boiler. 92-95% with a quart in 25 or so minutes is very possible.

I can pull a quart in 15 minutes at 96% with my 3". As for power input, bout half on my burner. Way less power since I reduced the size of my lava rock thereby increasing the density of my packing.
