first liebig fail.

Post by IrishEnigma »

Well lesson learned.

I should know better to not Jerry rig shit because my father has done it his whole life, but I was in a rush. Put .about 4' of 1/2" through 1-1/4" pvc capped on each end. Then ran hoses into a tight hole siliconed, both inlet and for water. Leaked like a siv after 2 hours and shut her down tore it apart, threw it around and called it a night. This was last night. Fortunately this morning I sold my worm and now have bought the fittings and pipe for a 3/4" jacket over the same 1/2".

Unfortunately I cannot access my 3/4" until later on I'm the week. As for now I'm continuing last nights run with the worm I sold that hasn't been picked up yet. Guess he doesn't need to clean it considering I coupled it together with flour paste...

It sounds a bit like my new one. I used 3/4" pipe Tees for the water jacket and put the 1/2" through brass compression fittings that had been drilled right through.

Both of my liebigs leak at the top and I like it that way because the siphon causes it to suck air and I know the water is running if I can hear it.

Well that's looking on the bight side. My liebig has the tiniest of leaks I notice 3 maybe 4 drops in a 3 hour run. It's killing me.
I'm goin the distance...

Stories like this make me glad that I tend to over engineer on the start . It just doesn't pay to cut corners to save a buck . When you have to go back and redo something the time and money spent on the redo wipes out what you saved the first time :(

LOL. My first leak was at the top where the pipe was just poked through the side of the PVC jacket. Every time I went to the trouble of fixing the leak it stopped making its sucking noise and I couldn't tell if the water was on without feeling the temperatures or looking at the end outlet hose out in the yard. When I built the second one, I had it all nicely watertight, parked the truck on the outlet hose and damned near popped the water jacket. After that I decided I preferred having the outlet hose pushed on with no fancy fittings or clamps and loose enough to give me my audible water flowmeter back. Both of them only leak a few seconds before the siphon takes care of it.

If you are applying silicone to the outside of the cap only, maybe try putting silicone on the inside - the little bit of water pressure may close the leak.

Dunno if silicone is the right thing for the job - does it not just peel off the PVC? if so, I would think that you will eventually have a leak even with it on the inside. What about standard house grade caulking instead? Or some kind of epoxy?

Yea I usually never rig things up, but things are a little messed up right now lol. We had to move out of our house (family house of 5) and had to finish it by tomorrow. We just started packing yesterday. We also had to move my grandparents stuff out of our storage unit so we could fill it. So after a 15 hour day of packing/moving, All the moving is done except my shed . Doing last run tomorrow. Until the shed is cleaned out.

We're now living in a 1 bedroom condo.... Yes family of 5....Hopefully only for a few weeks. Looking to buy a place now. Had to vent for a moment.

But anyways back to topic, I went and bought the fittings, will be getting the pipe later in the week. will get everything soldered together soon, can't wait. Have a couple friends that are letting me distill/ferment at their places. Not to far from my 1 bdrm condo with 5 people living in it. 3 of which are children....

Will post pics/results later of the new and improved. Excited to experience the difference of a liebig and worm.
