Turbo yeast

Never used it myself - everything I'm saying here is based on what I've read here in the forums. From everything I read, the general consensus is that turbo yeast isn't good for making drinkable alcohol. I guess the main problem is that it's pumped up with additives designed to increase the % ABV of the wash and this translates to nasty off-flavors. It's even reported that it can turn the distillate blue with ammonia compounds that render it unsafe to drink.

So, I would advise those who receive a free packet with a newly purchased still, or get talked into purchasing it by an over zealous brew shop salesperson to toss it, or use it for a cleaning (sac) run wash.

Never used it either but have added too much nutrient to a batch and it turned blue and had the ammonia smell. Not a fun job getting that out of your boiler!! :lolno:

Turbo is probably ok to use for a 10% or so abv wash, especially with a starter, but I don't see the point with 2 lb of bakers yeast going for 6 bucks at Sams.

Sac runs are the only use for Turbo.
