Is used copper safe? (refrigerator)

Post by JH1 »

There's some cheap 2" copper tubing (Type L) for sale that was previously used for a fridge system. (I'm guessing r-134, or something similar)
Of course I am going to soak it in a vinegar solution, scrub out, then have a final soak in lemon juice & water solution.

I'm just wondering if this is safe to use?

I would say that it should be fine. As probably the majority of people here ( myself included ) have used copper purchased from a scrap dealer with no idea what it's previous use was. Proper cleaning will make it ok to use.

" Is used copper safe "
That's a question that's seldom asked, but should be.
The next question should be how to safely reuse old copper tubing.

At the size it is I would venture to say its just the gas vent and had a very limited exposure if any to a refrigerant or a condensate drain that never was exposed to refer. If it was a condensate drain be carful they have nasty nasty things in them like legionela. Then again it could be from a large chiller. Either way as long as your carful and clean it to shiny new metal it should be fine. Hell there have been people on here that used 4" copper sewer pipe straight off the shitter.

I'd use it. If I made some crappy shine I would have something to blame it on. Pardon the pun. Yea I'd use the 4 in dwv or your 2 in refrigerant line.

If solder joints are present, check them for lead using a test kit available at home improvement stores for a measly $10 in the plumbing department.
