School schedule in Australia

Post by defcon4 »

I know a lot of you guys live down there in Australia, so I figure ya'll will know the answer to this question. I've always wondered, since your summer season occurs during the northern hemisphere's winter season, do schools let kids out for "summer" break during your summer season or do they still get "summer" break during June-July-August in your wintertime.

I've always wondered this since I was in middle school about 10-15 years ago.

Oh, and do the toilets down there really flush counterclockwise? :D

Our main school/uni break is over Xmas (our summer), with a month break in the middle of the year.

And our toilets flush upwards, cause we're upside down.

The main break is over summer ie christmas. I think it starts mid December and finishes beginning of Feb.

And yes the toilets do flush anti clockwise :)

Edit: beat me cause I had to check if the toilet really did flush the other way :)

It is actually a common urban myth that flushing toilets and draining bathtubs, etc, flow the opposite way in the two different hemispheres. The Coriolis effect isn't strong enough to make any difference, and even if it was it would flow in the opposite direction usually believed (ie it would go clockwise in the southern hemisphere). If your toilet flushes counterclockwise it is only because it is designed that way. Mine doesn't flush either way, just straight down.

Sorry to spoil your fun, folks.

The mindless things we do eh?
I read the thread, I read the Wikipedia.
I tried the toilet - no observable movement.
kitchen sink, from stationary water, pulled the plug - anti clockwise
bathroom handbasin, same water conditions - anti clockwise.
I think I'll have another drink :?

Pot still with Leibig on 45 litre boiler

I dont know if it is any help, but our toilet does not flush either way during school holidays because the kids have usually stuffed toilet rolls or the dog down it.
