rum maN

Post by freshwaterjellyfish »

I guess i havnt laid my welcome yet..so here goes:
My interest is primarily rum. I didnt start this hobby to cut any corners. Id rather twiddle my thumbs waiting for real vanilla bean to come in the mail than put artificial crap in my drink...
I have alot to learn, but put my nose up to recipes that call for white sugar...come on fellas!!
Happy stilling yall!!

Thanx for the welcome fellas! It's a huge wealth of knowledge here.
..funny you mention cosco- i just used org pure evaporated cane sugar. I thought it would have been pretty special..it turned out fairly neutral-it was missing that rummy molasses aroma. My standards have skyrocketed since a run with ALL rumtails..Lord have mercy, was it ever good!

No need to dilly dally then.
1 part molasses
2 parts water
Tea spoon of nutes per gallon.

Check out hookrum in the t&t. Did this with blackstrap and cane sugar. My first rum. Tasted good off the spout and I am not a rum fan. Put it in some quart jars with a bit of raisins, real vanilla bean, and some charred oak from bourbon barrels. Like I said, I'm no rum fan but I could drink this all day long!

I really like pugirum in TnT. I think the fast ferment gives some special flavors. Put some in a jar with a few oak chips and raisins (I'm ashamed to say I used vanilla extract  ) Its pretty ridiculous after a few weeks.
No, officer, I wasn't distilling alcohol! It was probably that guy!

Thanx alot for the tips. Theres gotta be as many ways to make rum as there are people that drink it, so i gotta keep making new recipes.
I tracked "Hector" down on this site (new HD name now) for advice also.
Some advice back to anyone that will read this: TURBINARO SUGAR makes some sexy rum. So far its made the best (well, except for a run w all tails).
Thanx again!!

You and I will get along just fine FWJF

Respect for having this outlook so early, I too have become a sugar snob and the spirits I make have drastically improved as a result. Got to start somewhere though.

And welcome to the forum

Hey if your looking for year round Vanilla beans in Canada try your local Bulk Barn. 4.99 for 2 beans and they carry them year round. Usually up at the counter in a small glass test tube.

Yuppers...thats the only place i found it at. ..but im very frugal..lol..i ordered a big bag of good quality madigascar bourbon for cheap from vanilla food company.ca all my spices from even from my first run are together in a mason jar..i open the jar and take a big wiff at times :)) its like a tincture of sweet goodness.
I bet in Australia the pickings are great for quality raw products.. good to hear you share my thoughts Brendan.

wow great link to the vanilla foodco...Thanks!

i think i gained a couple pounds reading there. (or i'm about to) so the obvious question: have you tried the bourbon beans in some bourbon? i've put beans in rum, but never thought to use any in bourbon.
I finally quit drinking for good.

now i drink for evil.
