Preventing "Puking" from Full Size Keg Boiler

Post by CornMealKid »

Here's a question: How full is too full when filling a full-size American keg with wash? The thing says 15.88 Gallons or something like that on the side, I would assume 75-80% full of wash would be safe right?? So... 11.9 - 12.7 G?? Anyone have experience on this?

My boiler charges tend to be 10-11 gallons, probably wouldn't go over 12 if it were me!

The math says 12.5g but if it's an AG it will puke. I've found putting SS scrubbies in the column packed but still easily blown thru will keep it from contaminating your product.

How long is a piece of string?

You have several variables here. Wash clarity, wash/mash type, starch content, low wines, heat input, boiling point of the wash, surface tension (added oil or not)...ect.
I've had 8 gals puke, and had 14 gals work just fine. It all depends on the variables.

Alright seems to be that I should stay under 12 Gallons. Thanks.
