Nice bottles

I just thought I'd put a note down here about these new bottles I've found. Since I started the hobby, I'm always on the lookout for interesting bottles for storing and giving gifts filled with homemade goodness.

There is a rather new Italian brand of Chianti on the market here in the southern U.S. (probably elsewhere also) called Bell'Agio.

The wine comes in a squat bottle with a straw/corn husk looking wrapper around the bottom. It comes in 1L and 1 1/5 L sizes. The wine itself is midiocre at best ... but I'm not a wine buff. It's ok for dinner or with a sprite mixed in.

Anyway, if you take the husk wrapping off the bottom and two plastic rings ... you're left with a nice roundish bottle with a neck to it, and a flat bottom. They are quite stable as far as spilling over goes. They are clear and the only markings (after you take the label off) are the glass makers (made in Italy).

I've taken to getting a bottle or two of this when at the market and saving the bottle. Just thought I'd spread it along. Also it's not that costly at about $8 a bottle.

Nice bottle at a great price. So far I have only been able to find standard wine, spirit and beer bottles (used empties from friends), and 5 litre demijohns from the brewing shop for $25.

Speaking of demijohns, do you folks here have a preferred handle type? And if so why?

i have a few of the same demijohns and i like the looped handle just cause they feel stronger, but not quite as easy to pour (and 5ltrs is heavy to pour.. 2ltrs is a great size/weight) and at $15 a pop :P (in not gonna bother with the whole US and AUS $ thing as we are at $0.98 :P )

Get as amny two litre flagons as i want from a bloke at work who drinks three full of port a week

It's the 4.5 litre swinging ones on a stand i'd like to get more of

Ain't it funny though, when you pull the labels and lids of your standard 1 litre or 700 ml spirit bottles, it's always the scotch ones that are the prettiest. Even cheapie scotches have some purty bottles. :)

It would be great if I could find a bloke like that. Many wines that used to be sold in flagons have gone to casks, including many ports or at least the larger chains do not stock them. Maybe transport breakage is a problem?

Bottles in midwest US

I'm not pitching a website, but here in the US there is a place called Infinity Packaging out of the midwest (Kansas City & Des Moines). They have 'Bar Mix' bottles for around .70 w/ lid and 1 gallon wide mouth jars for 1.50 w/ lid. Shipping can add and make it prohibitive, but if you can drive to their place it can save a lot of money. Minimum order is $250.

Reused bottles from friends, especially novelty bottles are 'keepers' for me.

Been there, done that now.
2 Litre glass flagon with screw cap $1.70(aus) each.
I know used ones are cheaper if you can get them but -
Giganis Bros in Adelaide if anyone is interested.

By the way Hookline, they had the 5litre demi's as in your photo for around $16 I believe. Other brewing and wine making equipment, 50litre glass jugs in cane baskets etc all at good prices.
and no, I have no connection with them, just stumbled over it.
Cheers

Yeah, same here. I just can't stop thinking those open handles are going to snap off, but they are much easier to hang onto and pour. I always put my other hand under the bottom of the jug, just in case.

BTW, checked out some of the photos on your site, not quite my cup of tea but interesting stuff.

Thanks for that, but I ain't anywhere near Adelaide. By the time I paid freight I wouldn't be saving any money.

I've found good prices on various glass jugs and such on the web, but the shipping is always the killer. If you can find a good place in driving distance, you're doing fine.

All the glass I've priced out, the shipping ends up being as much or more then the glass itself costs.

:P

p.s. I found a nice 1l apple juice bottle at the store this week, lol.
