Hello -

I've looked everywhere for a once used 3 gallon whiskey barrel, and of the places mentioned to have them, they are not available. wanted to see if anyone had a source (or had some on hand) available in the next few months. I would even go in on a new barrel for someone to small batch age some of their whiskey in before handing the freshly used barrel off to me. I may go up to 5 gal, but i would prefer 3-3.5 gal. I Let me know if you can help! :)

Thanks,

Brian

Hello Brian. Keep searching, this is a well liked size for us home stillers. You can also use charred oak strips or chips of different woods. The ABV of your distilate should be at least 60% when using wood. Good luck. srs

Anything above 70% is capable of actually eating the wood and adding some potential off flavors.

Most people oak between 55-65%.

Honestly.
Small whiskey barrels are pretty.
But, a couple of charred/toasted oak strips in gallon jars works as good, and probably better.
