Is it possible? What would need to be done to successfully reuse the wash out of a boiler after distillation for refermenting new wash? Wanting to save water. Or is this all bad?

Look into dunder and backset, and their usage.

I see a lot of people go through a lot of effort to save a few gallons of water. I guess here in the Confederacy I am used to water being relatively inexpensive. How high dollar is water in these other parts of the world?

Read some of the recipes in the "Tried and True Recipes" section. Many of them talk about reusing backset or dunder in new ferments.

You've been a member here for 2 years. Maybe time you started doing some reading.

I am actually asking for a friend. I have always used new water. I did read around and saw some reusing for flavor. I prefer having bitter moderators point me in the right direction considering the search function here sucks.

Not bitter - just an observation and a recommendation.

Reusing backset will require getting familiar with pH and how it affects your (or your friend's) world. Extra flavors would be a bonus. Maybe calcium carbonate is easier to come by than water for some.

Best way to get an understanding of some of the issues related to using backset is to pick a tried and true grain recipe (Sweet Feed, UJSSM, or some other) and read the thread. Whether you intend to make the recipe, or not, that's where the methods and issues are discussed.

Great advice Cack. There are lots of great techniques to be found in the T&T recipes. Jimbo's AG recipes and the rum recipes there pop in my mind as some of the best examples.

So true, I think the biggest reason T&T recipes get there is because the good stuff is as much a result of process as ingredient list.

I think some of the long running recipe threads are the most valuable treasures this site has to offer. Where else can you get a synopsis of the process from preping the ingredients to tempering the end product - with all the little pitfalls and nuances discussed at length. If a newbie READS the UJ thread, they are usually rewarded with a successful outcome. And, that's true with any other well discussed recipe. It's where the knowledge of the experienced and the questions of the inexperienced meld into something wonderful.
