*preface* im expecting to get slamed for this but heh... anyone wants to jump in with their stupid/diferent :shifty: batches feel free.

in the past ive made soda shine. one that i liked was the rootbeer based one. suprisingly good if you like root beer.
i also had an idea of tomato shine to be aged with basel. i couldnt bring my self to put it in the boiler so it went down the toilet, maybe one day.

the other day i found cheap nerds.
Image#

i had the idea to make a gallon of nerd wine. using them for sugar and flavour. if it goes well i may see how the liqour versoin tastes

*note to self- 5 packs should make a UK gallon @ 8.2% abv

Mostly sugar: sucrose, fructose, and malic acid. OK.

So how do you process them?
1) Crush
2) Boil in water
3) Chill to 90F
5) Skim wax off
6) Rack to fermenter

I'm just curious how'd you do it. I've never done a 'candy ferment'.

Woo sounds like you and janitor would like both Nerds and Now and Laters!
I think Janitors kool aide is probably easier.

Walmart!!!!

Its a knock off brand like toasty grams or something. Comes in 2lb bags and cost like $3.

I'm just gonna do a 5gal and do it like the corn flakes recipe. I've been strictly tried and true for a year now and I just want to try an experiment!

don't think vie done a single thing of the tried and true. I have how ever used it as a jumping off point and idea building area for my own wacky adventures.

I appreciate all the work and effort from those that came before. with their incite and using a similar formula I embark on making something in my own way.

Mr. flatwoods you have my attention. what's one of them?

It is a long lasting taffy candy Woo that comes in individually wrapped squares like a Starburst if you know what that is. Varied fruit flavors. Google will show you ttha parent company and their candies like Lemonheads and atomic fireballs as well.
Wlamart had 5 lbs of Now and Laters for $20. Taffy may be hard to melt, hard to eat so eat some now and some later!

so i ended up making the nerds wash at my soh house. realized i was lacking almost every thing i needed. so its made 13yo style. no exact measurements and using a 5l bottle with tin foil as a lid. the colour is shit but it smells nice.

I did a 'Hail Mary' type run today.
All the bottles of less than perfect wine from the last few years.
Good preparation for moving house!
Hope to get some reasonable 'fruit salad' brandy from it + feints to use with the rougher wine, and assorted failed experiments + some hideous fig wine that I expect will come out like (after cuts and oaking) like Tequila.

In the 60's I used to make Hawaiian Punch wine...the frozen concentrate was sometimes 5 for a $1.

Many years ago the standby around here was "purple passion" which is welches grape juice, raisins, sugar/water. I ran some to make a purple passion brandy and it was not bad but the interesting thing was...I threw the feigns in my regular feigns carboy. Next time I ran a whiskey run I added the feigns and the whiskey came out with a brandy type flavour. Sounds weird/yucky but it was actually good and reminded me of whiskey stored in used brandy barrels.

Probably never be able to replicate it but it was good while it lasted.

I used to do some wacky "wine" ferments during the winter months when fresh or even cheap fruit was hard to come by.

Ribena "wine" which actually turned out nice (use the full-fat version).

Coffee "wine" which was ok.

Tea and raisin "wine" which I used to love.

Cabbage and onion "wine" which was truly horrendous.

Malt "wine" which was 1 Kg dried malt extract to 1 gallon water with yeast pitched.

Ginger and sultana "wine" which was nice and warming in the winter months.

I've been thinking of resurrecting some my old "wine" recipes (not the cabbage one) and running them to see what they are like off the still.

Phill - gotta ask, were you smoking something when you came up with the cabbage and onion wine?

That must have been god-awful smelling during ferment - I can only imagine the sulfur smells.

No, wasn't smoking anything, just bored, young and stupid!

Had sugar, yeast, empty demijohn and they were the only vegetable matter kicking about.

I really should have asked myself why cabbage and onion wasn't stocked alongside chardonnay & chablis in the wine aisle at my local supermarket!

It smelled as you can imagine and got tipped down the drain long before it fermented dry!

I enjoy this thread. I've been more or less relentlessly harassed about this whole kool-aid hooch. For a while I actually considered it, but at the end of the day decided nah. Never much cared for the stuff. These candy ferments sound pretty interesting, though.

My particular location surrounds me in orchards and fruit processing plants. Figure I can get a drum of unpasteurized apple juice on the cheap, so I aim to try that. Some friends and I tried cherries last year. Turns out there ain't enough sugar in that by itself to be useful. Lesson learned.

I'm going to consider a candy to try. Will post decision along with results on here.
