Used Source of Wood Chips?

My friend works for a company installing industrial smoke houses and maintaining them. He was over the other day and I was talking about adding oak to my product when he mentioned all the used charred wood chips he can get from the smokers. Apparently the used charred chips do not come in contact with meat. I was concerned that maybe the smoke was recirculated through the chips, but he said that it does not so i think they should be safe. I'm going to get him to get a bunch and I'll try them out.
Anyone try them out of a smoke house like this?
