Reusing wood Chips

Post by werrty »

Hey all I was wondering if you can reuse wood chips after you have used them to flavour your alcohol?

You can do whatever you want. Used wood, especially wood chips I think because of the higher surface area to volume ratio, will have diminishing returns. Less color less flavor more slowly. But I've found that i like the of my spirit better when aging it on once used charred oak dominoes than with freshly charred dominoes
I buy all my liquor at the hardware store.

I reuse my JD chips in the charcoal grill. They make for a damned fine steak.

a lot of people I think use them a second time in some way or another. I just pull some bourbon off French oak spiral and put it in a single malt scotch . its got a nice nose to it at this time and color is starting to change color slowly.

Thanks guys I'm just trying to figure out what to do. Whether I buy a couple of oak barrels. Or I have a unlimited number of kegs. So I'm thinking of using the kegs for storage and just adding oak chips or dominoes. Another question is if I did go the way of the oak barrel how long do they last. I'm thinking about changing to a smash, over essences and wonder how many time you can continue to keep using a oak barrel

I think we need to hit the brakes here. How much liquor are you trying to age and store in your unlimited number of kegs?
