Almost 5g fermenter --free
Just sharing for anyone looking for a possibly free 4gal (4.3gal I think it was) fermenter.. Sure it's on the slightly smaller side, but.. working in a restaurant I have an unlimited supply so long as we continue to deep fry food. Our fryer oil (soybean) comes in these and yeah.. we go through them like crazy. Other benefits are the screw down cap (easy to add an airlock), and handle.. Couldn't imagine why I couldn't turn one/many into a fermenter after a (very) good cleaning.. so I'm giving it a shot.. by next week I will post whether or not I find any downside, I have a sweet feed and a sugar wash going as seen here... I'd imagine if you don't work in a restaurant, you'd not have much trouble finding one that'll give you empty fryer oil containers.. *shrug* Any thoughts?

In case anyone checks back to see, this worked fine, and I'll be using more of these from now on...

Nice! Anything free is usually a good deal
I think this is a great idea for the "distiller on a budget" like myself. They would also be great for camping.

The truth is like salt. Men want to taste a little, but too much makes everyone sick.

Absolutely! It helps considering the amount of money that goes into copper

I had a line on some of those a while back, but didn't follow through with it. I asked about them at a restaurant and they said they throw them away when they change out the oil in their deep friers - just needed to do a little dumpster diving. They should also be good for storing wash if you can fill them completely and get an airtight seal. Costco sells oil in them, but I don't know what I would do with that much cooking oil.

Ah yes.. I spose I do have the advantage of working in a restaurant... but.. if you had to buy one at costco... throw the oil in a 5g bucket and deep fry a turkey for thanksgiving!

You don't even need that airlock. Just put some cling wrap over the cap hole and a rubber band (not super tight).
Goodbye.

Funny, though I'm not saying that wouldn't work... cling wrap is my mortal enemy, i lose every battle i have with it ... and.. anytime EVER that i need a rubber band... guess how many i can find... a fat zero is the answer

I have easy access to these too and have used them for clearing after primary ferment. My problem has always been getting all the oil out. I have started using TSP and Dawn. How are you washing yours?

Oh just dawn and hot water actually... and some vigorous shaking till my arm can't anymore, and multiple rinses... seems to do the trick
