I just picked up some 5 gallon steel paint cans that have never been used. I'm thinking this would be good to use when I don't want to use my 15.5 gal keg as a boiler. They came with lids that seal.

My buddy says he wouldn't use them as they will rust like crazy and/or leech something into my lquid. I think he's wrong as I've read several posts that some of you use these steel paint cans as boilers. Opinions?

ya got any clue what those cans are coated with ???

Listen to your buddy.

Stillin is not the place for cutting corners.

those are generally tin plated. The tin cracks and allows the steel to rust quickly just like a soup can in the rain. It would not hurt you but it will have a short lifetime. The structure is very flimsy and won't support much abuse. On the other hand they are very easy to cut and solder to.
Tin is especially resistant to acid but if there is even the slightest dent it will expose the steel.
A ss beer keg would be a better choice.

Use the keg.

You can run small quantities if you need too... It still works the same.

forget the paint cans...
