I have an essential extractor with two columns. My first two runs made very little product. Now I am getting better, my last run of whiskey produced almost a half gallon (with 5 gal wash).I am now running off just sugar water with turbo 48 yeast and already have over a half gallon of nice vodka, (running water through the reflux head) I am only using one of the columns, and it is packed with copper for scrubbers...It started coming off slow, but, after 8 hours it is still coming off at 80 C. and coming off fast...I just followed the directions on the package of the Turbo it is working like a charm....OK..now to whiskey...I read alot on homedistillers and this is what I do for whiskey mash.....about 3 lbs of flaked maize, cook it until it thickens, let the temp drop to around 160F and add in a pound of 2 row malted barley, let it simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, then add 2 lbs brown sugar and 5 lbs regular sugar, and I also put in the zest of an orange. Let it cool down and add the bakers yeast. the rest is history. makes a good smooth drink. And produces a lot. Being a newbie this is my question...Please tell me about the differences in yeasts, and Uncle Jessie, How do you strain the wash and save the yeast for a second run? Any help would be greatly appreciated. just me,an old ass newshiner
